Our History10 years of Tutoring Los Angeles County Children

For the past 10 years Century/LIFT (a 501(c) non-profit organization) has been working in the greater Los Angeles community, providing remedial and academic assistance to our students in need. We have had more than 2500 students come through our program, and today we average 245 students per year. And through the years, not only have we seen improvement in student academic performance, but we have also seen more of our students graduate from high school, putting them on the path to college. Moreover, Century/LIFT has increased parent commitment to education within our communities.

TThe Century/LIFT staff puts in 100% to ensure that our students, who are living in poverty and scarred from violence in the disenfranchised neighborhoods of Los Angles County or residing in transitional housing for the homeless, receive academic tutoring in English-Language Arts, Mathematics, History, Science and Reading Comprehension.

Read a Century/LIFT Success Story

Before Century/LIFT, Eva Ortega was just your ordinary “B” average student. Raised in a single-parent household by her mother with two older brothers and one younger brother, Eva was simply coasting along in school at Baldwin Hills Elementary. When her family moved to the La Brea Gardens apartments, Eva started attending the Century/LIFT program on a daily basis. Her grades shot up in both reading and math, and she began to excel in writing. That was six years ago. Now in the 12th grade and attending Dorsey High School/Math Science Magnet, Eva will be the first one to attend college in her family. Eva possesses a 3.8 GPA and wants to go to college at Stanford University. To Eva: “Century/LIFT is the soil and she is the seed and thanks to the program, she is now sprouting and growing her leaves.” The Century/LIFT program has given her the opportunity to succeed and opened many new doors for her so that she can continue on the road to college. “The Century/LIFT program improved my science grades, expanded my vocabulary and provided me with valuable resources and information regarding college,” she pointed out. So what’s next for Eva? Besides the fact that she wants to help nurture her younger brother to succeed, in 10 years Eva sees herself working and being an active role model and/or a mentor for kids. She wants to give back to her community.

Eva is Century/LIFT’s first participant in the UCLA EAOP (Summer 2008).
